Independent Financial Adviser
Kerry is a highly qualified adviser who enjoys providing meaningful advice that is easy to understand.
"I believe financial planning is very important but some people feel daunted by it. My aim is to help make the complicated simple and meaningful, because when you understand what you have, you are in a better position to make the most of it and plan for the future.
"Nothing gives me more joy than when a client says, "Now I understand"
Kerry has always been driven to understand exactly how things work and then interpret and explain it in her own words, so that others can benefit. Kerry's career began working for a small IFA firm then she joined the Cheltenham and Gloucester as a mortgage adviser, then branch manager. Kerry then trained as a para planner before becoming an IFA. She joined Baker Davies in March 2015.
How did you become a financial adviser and areas of advice
"Although I enjoyed advising clients about mortgages when I was at the Cheltenham and Gloucester, I felt very restricted in what I could do to help. I wanted to be able to advise in all areas of financial planning. I also knew that there would be a huge gap in knowledge if I were to move from mortgage adviser to IFA. So I took what looks like a sideways career step and trained as a para planner. This research role, over two years, enabled me to really understand the detail of financial products, taxation, principles for investing, planning and wealth management. I wanted to gain a lot of experience researching solutions for many different kinds of situations, so that I would be better prepared before guiding my own clients from 2012 onwards."
Kerry also studied and passed many financial exams - far more than the minimum required. She is able to advise in virtually all areas of financial planning (except certain final salary scheme transfers), including investments, pensions, protection and wealth management plus mortgages including equity release, inheritance tax, later life planning, and she is well on her way to acquiring Chartered status.
What drew you to financial planning as a career?
"As a financial adviser I have the pleasure of meeting and getting to know interesting and lovely clients. Also I enjoy variety and challenge. The financial services industry and solutions are forever changing, so it's never boring keeping up to speed.
It is important to me that I can be competent and confident with my clients so I need to know the technical details. Some people say I'm a bit geeky because of the amount I have studied. 'm studying so that I can apply my knowledge and make a difference."
